RSCCD project profile
At the heart of Rancho Santiago Community College District’s public safety education, the Orange County Sheriffs’ Regional Training Academy serves as a place where instructors guide recruits and prepare future officers for the demands of real world service. The district’s commitment to a dependable and modern learning environment ensures that each upgraded space becomes a setting where communication, preparedness and professional development can grow, and the AV integration strengthens this purpose by providing clear information, reliable technology and seamless interaction throughout training.
Project Description
The Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Audio Visual Upgrades project transformed key instructional and operational areas inside the Orange County Sheriffs’ Regional Training Academy. Classrooms, sergeant offices and a divisible multipurpose space that includes dining areas and the gymnasium were upgraded to support the high standard of training required at the Academy.
Our team integrated a complete lecture and presentation system using Spectrum, Extron, Shure, Aver, Williams AV, and Ruckus technologies, combining new equipment with Owner Furnished Contractor Installed components. Existing displays and projectors were tied into a new AV backbone built around Extron control, switching and DSP. The result is a modernized training environment where instructors can deliver lessons, review scenarios and lead briefings with ease and clarity.
The Challenge
The project required upgrading active training spaces without interrupting daily Academy operations. Many rooms contained older systems that had to be removed, repurposed or integrated into the new design. Multiple spaces had different acoustic conditions, ceiling types and cable pathways, which required careful coordination and sequencing.
Another challenge was the mixture of newly provided equipment and OFCI products that included microphones, speakers, cameras, amplifiers and lecterns. Every device had to be verified for compatibility, labeled correctly, installed precisely and programmed to work as a single unified system.
The Academy also needed the upgraded systems to align with RSCCD standards and future plans to expand remote management through the district’s network and Utelogy control environment.
Through its commitment to strengthening instructional spaces, RSCCD enhanced the Orange County Sheriffs’ Regional Training Academy with modern AV systems built around Extron switching and control, QSC audio processing, Shure MXA ceiling array microphones, Aver auto-tracking and PTZ cameras and Williams AV assisted listening technology. These upgrades created a reliable environment that delivers clearer speech, stronger audio coverage and flexible instructional tools, resulting in a dependable system that supports smoother training sessions and a better learning experience for both instructors and recruits.
Technologies and Solutions Used
1. Instructor Lecterns and Core AV Infrastructure
Each classroom received a Spectrum Freedom One eLift lectern with ADA compliant height adjustment and a rack for all AV processing. Inside the lectern, the system is built around Extron hardware including the IN1806 seamless switcher, IPCP Pro control processor, NetPA Dante amplifier, and DMP 64 Plus DSP. These components form the stable backbone that connects laptops, document cameras, cameras and existing displays.
2. Audio Capture and Reinforcement
To provide clear voice pickup and sound throughout classrooms, the upgrades use Shure MXA920 ceiling array microphones along with Extron FF220T flat-field ceiling speakers and Extron Dante amplifiers. Audio routing, echo cancellation and equalization are handled by the Extron DMP series DSP, ensuring strong clarity for instruction, debriefing and hybrid sessions.
3. Video Capture and Instructional Tools
Front and rear room coverage is provided by Aver auto-tracking cameras, including TR323NV2 cameras at the front of the room and PTZ310 cameras facing the audience. Each lectern also includes an Elmo TT-12G document camera for sharing physical materials. These products support lecture capture, scenario review and remote instruction.
4. Control, Connectivity and Networking
All AV control is delivered through Extron IPCP Pro processors and Cable Cubby 100 connectivity modules, providing instructors with HDMI, USB-C and power access. Signal extension and transport use Extron DTP 4K receivers and USB extenders. Networking for AV traffic is handled by Ruckus ICX7150 switches, which support the district’s long-term plan for centralized management.
Project Outcome
The upgraded spaces at the Orange County Sheriffs’ Regional Training Academy now deliver consistent, dependable and modern audiovisual performance. Instructors can connect a device, control the room from the Spectrum lectern and rely on Shure ceiling microphones, Aver cameras and Extron processing to capture and deliver instruction smoothly. Recruits benefit from clearer audio, better visibility of demonstrations and the ability to review content when needed.
With the integration complete, RSCCD and OCSRTA now have a future-ready AV environment that strengthens communication, supports ADA accessibility, aligns with district standards and enhances the quality of training for the region’s law enforcement professionals.
